What is IPDB?

IPDB—the Indian Palaeo Database—is a national open-data platform and community-driven infrastructure dedicated to providing free and accessible palaeoecological and palaeoenvironmental data from across India. Supported by leading research institutions, IPDB enables scientists, students, and policymakers to explore India’s deep-time records, including fossils, pollen, sediments, and climate proxies. Its mission is to advance research, education, and collaboration by offering high-quality, curated datasets that help us understand past ecosystems, climate change, and the long-term dynamics of the Indian subcontinent.

Thematic communities

IPDB’s data, infrastructure and services empower cross-disciplinary palaeoscience research, opening new pathways for evidence-based understanding of Earth’s past environments. Guided by the IPDB Scientific Advisory Panel, we track how palaeoecological and palaeoenvironmental data are generated, shared and used to identify emerging research priorities with national and global relevance. We continuously work to enhance the quality, completeness and usability of India’s palaeo datasets—supporting diverse communities across science, conservation, climate research, geoscience, archaeology and policy. Our goal is to ensure that long-term environmental records become a central foundation for understanding present challenges and future change.
